How Do We Respond to God's "Calling"?
Answering the Call on Speakerphone
In December, I began sharing my testimony about past mental health struggles, receiving uplifting support. It was incredible to see how opening up about my story made others feel less alone. I learned first-hand that there is power in honesty. This summer, God prompted me to share the remaining 1%, reminding me of His call to share my testimony. I realized the importance of heeding the Holy Spirit's call, and I wasn't going to make that mistake again.
Is Your Phone Vibrating in Your Pocket?
I believe many can relate to the fear of answering the Lord's call. Questions like, "What will others say? How will loved ones respond? Will my friends still accept me if they know my whole story?" The fear is genuine, but it doesn't come from the Lord. Instead the Lord will provide unwavering support for He encourages us to "Give all your worries and cares to [Him], for He cares about [us]" (1 Peter 5:7, NLT).
Setting Sail from God's Call
As humans, we often resemble the bible character Jonah, setting sail in the opposite direction of the Lord's calling. While sometimes the call is explicit, it more often comes through prayer, scripture, conviction during church gatherings, or quiet nudges of the heart. What is God trying to communicate to you? Is He leading you towards a particular relationship, major, career path, school, or endeavor? Listen and respond to the call without attempting to negotiate or delay.
When Jesus called His disciples, they dropped their nets.
When the Holy Spirit called Ananias, he went to Saul.
But when the Lord called Jonah, he fled by boat.
Each one of us has had moments where we have been Jonah.
Negotiating with God
Jonah tried to negotiate and believed God would use someone else, but God wanted him specifically. God will often get what He desires.
We may not know what the "big fish" in our life is, but it's not always pleasant. It shouldn't be our first choice. Why engage in a tug-of-war with the Creator of the universe? Do you truly think you can prevail?
"But God, I can still..."
- Be a positive influence on my non-believing girlfriend/boyfriend
- Glorify You in the major of my choosing
- Shine for You in the career path I prefer
- Serve You in the school I've chosen
- Be a faithful member of the fraternity I want
If the Lord has called you to make significant changes, such as ending a relationship or altering your life's course, embrace His calling without resistance, even if the alternative seems sweeter. If he has called you, answer it.
The Radical Transformation of a Life
In the story of Saul, we witness a profound transformation. He was once a persecutor of the early Christian church, known for his role in killing and tormenting believers. However, on the road to a town with intentions to continue his persecution, God intervened and radically transformed his life. This transformation encompassed not only a change in career but also a change in name, from Saul to Paul. It involved a profound shift in identity and purpose.
Similarly, when we follow God's calling, He often introduces new ideas and directions for our lives. It requires us to place our identity in Christ and be willing to change.
Embrace the change. Answer the call. God has been on the line waiting for you to answer...
Will you answer?
